Animation and Visual Effects for Film-- Water Surface Wave Dynamics with Jerry Tessendorf, Principal Graphics Scientist at Rhythm & Hues Studios, where he builds new graphics tools for visual effects. Dr. Tessendorf has a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Brown University, and his research includes techniques in dynamical simulation, ocean optics, and volume rendering. Technical Achievement Awards 2007 (Academy Certificate) - For the development of the system of fluid dynamics tools at Rhythm & Hues. The list of films he has contributed fx software to includes Titanic (1997), The 13th Warrior (1999), Red Planet (2000), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (2005), Superman Returns and Happy Feet (both 2006), and The Golden Compass (2007). Prior to working in visual effects, he was a Corporate Senior Scientist at the research company Arete Associates.

A mini-series of 3 invited talks in 117C McAdams Hall, 4pm - 5:15pm, October 27, 29, and 31. These mini-series are open to all and no preregistration is required. However, an undergraduate level background in mathematics and computing will be most helpful in understanding these lectures.

Final Cut Pro Editing Workshop

Due to computer availability this workshop is limited to 24 participants who will also need to have prior knowledge of Final Cut Pro. This 2 day class will be presented by Weynand Training International. Diana Weynand, co-owner of the company, wrote the Apple Pro Training Series books on Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, and Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors. Diana is an alumni of USC receiving masters in both music and media. Diana’s colleague, Stephen Kanter, will be presenting the training session Nov 14-15. Stephen has been a Weynand trainer for several years training at CBS, CNN, and KTLA. He has recently been part of the Weynand consulting team that helped transition the Ellen Show editors into their new HD tapeless studio and workflow. Stephen is an Apple Final Cut Studio Master Trainer and Editor. He has cut features, documentaries, televlsion and the internet on both Avid and Final Cut systems for over 14 years. He has also taught at UCLA since 2006 and has been involved in the Apple Pro Training book series as both a technical editor and contributing author on books including Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors, Advanced Editing and Finishing Techniques in Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, and SoundTrack Pro.

The 2 day class will cover: Overview of Editing & Trimming, Rippling Edit Points, Trimming to Refine a Sequence, Preparing Your Sequence, Adjusting Two Edit Points, Slipping One Clip, Slipping Sequence Clips, Rolling Two Edit Points, Sliding Clips to Refine Position, Dragging Clips to New Locations, and Keeping Linked Clips in Sync, Creating Subclips, Adding Markers to Clips, Storyboard Editing, Replacing Edits and Editing Multicameras, Mixing Audio Tracks, Preparing the Project, Organizing and Editing Audio Tracks, Monitoring and Adjusting Audio Levels, Creating Titles, Working with Video Generators, Adding a Lower Third, Applying a Boris Title, Creating a Credit Roll, Adding Mattes and Other Generated Items, Changing Motion & Speed Properties, Creating a Freeze Frame, Applying Transactions, Evaluating Project Needs, Understanding Transitions, Applying Filters, Applying and Viewing Filters, Reviewing Motion Basics, Understanding Nested Sequences, Using Basic Slow Motion, Understanding Variable Speed and Effects, and Using the Motion Viewer, Understanding Contrast & Color Balance, Controlling Contrast Using the Color Corrector 3-Way Filter and much more.

There is no fee for this workshop for South Carolina students and media professionals. But, as the class is limited to 24, we will need your credit card information or check to register as there will be a $100.00 dollar cancellation fee. The cancellation fee for out of state residents will be $250.00
